The Anatomy of Wisdom Tooth Impaction
Third molars, commonly referred to as wisdom teeth, are the final permanent teeth to emerge, typically attempting to erupt between ages 17 and 25. Because modern human jaws are frequently narrower than those of our evolutionary ancestors, there is often insufficient arch space to accommodate these four large posterior molars.
When a third molar cannot fully erupt into healthy vertical alignment with opposing teeth, it becomes impacted. Wisdom teeth can be impacted horizontally (growing sideways directly into the roots of adjacent second molars), mesially angled (tilted forward), or completely enclosed within the jawbone and dense fibrous gingiva.
